Life As A New Step-Mother

Published by jenahlswede at 1:10 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

No little girl ever grows up to say, “I want to grow up to be a step-mom!” Including this little girl! Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would someday marry a man who had a previous wife and a child together. But that’s exactly what happened. I met a wonderful man, thanks to the introduction and encouragement of my father. I guess when it comes to picking a husband, father knows best! We fell in love and shortly after we started dating, we became engaged. Six months later … we were married! What a whirlwind!

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever be a step-mother. Even the word has negative connotations. Today’s media paints such a negative portrait of what a step-mother can be. Let’s face it, society seems to think step-mothers are plain “EVIL!” Why would anyone ever want their name associated with that title … step-mother.

Fortunately, my husband spent years preparing his wonderful, now seven year old, daughter for the day that her new step-mommy would come into the picture. Of course, shortly after the divorce, she wanted her mom and dad to get back together. Her dad, my amazing husband, was very clear that this would not happen and that he did want to be married again.

When I met my new step-daughter for the first time, it was love at first sight. Though my family is not like many new step-families, or what is also called a blended family, my heart is to share my story and offer encouragement and advice to all the other step-parents out there! I truly feel that the approach my husband and I are taking on building a successful blended family has been nothing but a positive experience for the both of us.

My hope is that the advice and comments written in this blog will reach out to many who need a bit of encouragement and knowledge on the best way to approach the many facets of step-family living.

Though many of my blogs will focus on Christian values and perspectives, I truly believe that whether you believe in God, or not, the morals, values and opinions stated in these articles will hold true no matter what your faith background may be.

I hope you stay tuned for the days, months and years to come! Don’t hesitate to comment, ask questions and refer friends to this potentially incredible resource! It’s my dream to bring back family values in the home, no matter what your family looks like.
